Cristina Sumaza, Founder, Lote 23

Cristina is the founder of Lote 23, a culinary and creative space in Santurce, Puerto Rico that provides authentic experiences focused on local talent and artists.

She has crafted her career believing that economic development is intrinsically connected to the community. Her passion to give back to the island led her to become Co-Founder of ConPRmetidos, a think-and-do tank that links the Puerto Rican diaspora to economic development initiatives in the island. Later she served as Community Builder Manager for Parallel18, and she led community, experience and business development efforts to support companies grow their business from Puerto Rico to international markets.

Josie Arroyo, Founder, Bien Cool

Josie Arroyo inspired by the lack of real talk in greeting cards started Bien Cool initially as a hobby in 2013 and formally launched in 2015. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Arroyo’s goal was simple for Bien Cool—make people laugh with funny, sometimes risqué and culturally relevant greeting cards and lifestyle products with sayings that express what we really want to say, how we actually say it. Under her leadership, the brand’s presence has increased from an e-commerce site servicing Puerto Rico and the United States to being sold at more than 100 retailers across Puerto Rico including at Walmart and a variety of convenience stores, in just two short years.

With more than 16,000 greeting cards sold in 2016 alone, Arroyo is quickly becoming a rising female entrepreneur in Puerto Rico and beyond, as she and the company were selected to participate in Parallel18, an acceleration program aimed at bringing innovators from around the globe to help them scale from Puerto Rico to global communities beyond the Island to help foster and promote entrepreneurship in Puerto Rico. Additionally, she was selected to join The Point 25 Initiative in New York City, which matches the most promising women-led companies with amazing C-level advisors for their advisory boards.

Prior to embracing entrepreneurship and dedicating herself full time to her passion project, Arroyo held positions as the News Editor at Yahoo! En Español, the Institutional Marketing Director for EDIC College and the Online Marketing Manager for National University College – Online Division in Puerto Rico.

Oramaika Sanchez, Founder, Afrolunatika

Empowering and inspirational phrases encrusted in metallic materials are the basic description of what this jewelry designer, Oramaika Sánchez, does with her line Afrolunatika. Oramaika uses a very special technique to create. She believes that connecting with her clientele is her secret weapon. “Listen to your clients more…when they give you ideas and suggestions. I’m always grateful and do apply many of them. This way the client feels part of my work, like a collaboration.” This shows when you see the pictures of the growing following of Afrolunatika wearing her pieces; a group of women using their earrings, necklaces, rings and cuffs as a cover letter of their strength.
