Let's Get Straight Into It
Let's get into it!! Are we curly, are we wavy..inquiring minds want to know!
Most people can live their whole life not knowing that they have textured hair and dismiss the fact that with the right products and technique, they can enjoy the duplicity of having curly and almost straight hair. We really can have the best of both worlds.

Straight hair is recognized as Type 1 in the traditional hair chart. It lacks texture and is typically fine and thin. Like the other hair types, Type 1 has 3 sub-categories that differentiate the slightest difference in relatively straight strands. Straight hair can be hard to manipulate and tends to be naturally greasy or oily, due in part to the gravitational pull of natural oils produced on the scalp navigating the length of the hair strand. This process happens relatively quickly, usually within a day or two, as the route is a direct shot from root to tip. This hair type can be limp and look a bit flat.
Can Straight Hair Get Waves?
Fun fact..did you know that only 2% of the worlds population has Type1a hair?! Type 1a is absolutely, positively, undeniable pin straight. These super straight strands are the rarest hair type and have no bump or curve detected at all, not even when wet. So, this means that 98% of the world's population has some sort of texture, even if its just a trace amount. So where there is a will, there is a way! Figuring out your perfect Rizos Curls Combo will help you expose any hidden texture and highlight any concealed waves or curls!
Rozalynn Salazar, Natural Hair Specialist & Curl Cut Stylist, suggests that if you observe some frizz after air drying or see slight texture on the underside of your hair you could be wavy! She mentions that those that are what we like to call "Undercover Curlies" also known as people with waves or curls but don't know it, should follow a few very specific rules. First, you will want to focus on light weight products that provide hold to lock in any texture or movement you have naturally. She also mentions to steer clear of any products that are heavy conditioners or moisturizers, as they can weigh down the slight texture you are trying to feature and enhance. If you have some dryness, use sparingly. Next Diffusing in a MUST! You need to use the magic of diffusing your curls to lift and dry your hair, scrunching and gathering hair in the the diffuser bowl and bringing it up towards the root. This encourages the pattern and locks it in while drying. If you air dry, gravity will pull your wet hair down, not allowing it to bounce up to reach its full wavy, curly potential.
How To Get Waves With Straight Hair
Bring 'em out! Bring 'em out!
Nathaly cracks the code on her lightly wavy hair by perfecting her Rizos Routine. She manages frizzy, dry, tangle prone hair that has areas that are thick and thin. Her roots lack volume and are very flat and she does not have much natural definition. Adding Rizos Curls Nourish Oil to her ends as a prep step before styling, soothes her dry ends and minimizes tangles without adding unwanted weight to the length of her hair. Nathaly then applies the Curl Defining Mousse to her hair, raking it in to disperse, but intentionally avoiding the roots to give her hair the best potential for volume. She follows with scrunching to encourage texture and applying a small amount of Rizos Curls Light Hold Gel to provide a layer of hold. She then adds Beach Wave Texturizing Salt Spray throughout her hair and finishes to lock in the texture & style with our Pink Collapsible Diffuser.
Sometimes your waves just need a little gentle coaxing to come out and make an appearance. Elisa has a minimal bump naturally, that reaches their pinnacle with the perfect Rizos Routine. She starts with freshly washed and conditioned hair and begins styling on wet, not damp hair. She rakes in Curl Defining Cream, ensuring even product coverage to her thick hair. She follows up with a layer of Light Hold Gel to define and provide weightless hold to her waves. Elisa has found the Curl Defining Mousse to be a new favorite, as it provides hydration, definition and much desired volume to her loose, thick waves. She uses the 30-60-90 method to diffuse her waves by checking when her hair is 30%, 60% and 90% to see if additional product is needed in areas that are frizzy or lacking definition. The finished look is sealed with a few drops of Rizos Curls Nourish Oil to tame frizz, seal in moisture and add shine!
